Orrick’s hiring strategy reflects its DEI priorities: The law firm considers candidate pools that are at least 30% diverse, and provides annual training for its interviewers to reduce bias. That has resulted in almost half of lateral partner hires—and 73% of associate hires—maintaining staff diversity over the past six years. Additionally, 86% of summer associates came from diverse backgrounds in 2023.
Over 99% of Orrick lawyers provided pro bono legal advice in 2022, reaching a total of more than 121,000 hours of unpaid counsel—the equivalent of hosting a 60-lawyer social impact law firm inside the organization.

The law firm advises clients in three main areas: technology and innovation; energy and infrastructure; and finance. In 2023, Orrick celebrated its 10th year on the Best Companies to Work For list.
- In an effort to encourage work-life balance, the company encourages employees to completely unplug from the office for 40 hours each year.
- The firm established a Racial Justice Fellowship Program in 2021 where five lawyers from Orrick can work for a year at full pay within a civil rights, criminal justice reform, or economic equity organization. It advanced the program further in 2022 with a privacy-law-focused fellowship.
- New associates receive one-on-one coaching, and the mentoring program materials have been revised to support hybrid employees, promoting connectivity over proximity.
- The firm has 16 affinity groups for its employees, including the Women’s Initiative and LGBTQ+ Attorney Affinity Group.
- Orrick offers access to mental health services through Modern Health, where employees and their families can receive 10 sessions a year for free along with premium access to the Calm app for mindfulness and stress management practices.
- “Over and over again, I’ve deeply appreciated Orrick leadership’s recognition of, concern for, and attention to employees’ financial, mental, emotional, and physical well-being,” one Orrick employee said. “I also deeply appreciate Orrick’s commitment to volunteer work through Orrick Cares hours.”

"There are many reasons why I think Orrick is an amazing place to work, and it starts with our leadership. There is an uncompromised understanding of our culture, a firm commitment to our clients and each other, and a clear vision of where we are headed. Orrick transitioned seamlessly to our new hybrid work model, continues to offer Wellness resources, and its commitment to Community Responsibility is unmatched."

Employees say:
"I LOVE that we get to work from home and there's no stigma to it! I love that there are opportunities to see other people's good work being rewarded and celebrated. I love that there is monetary compensation for a job well done, not just a sticker and a pat on the back. I love that finding the right fit for your skillset is a priority; it's not just, 'Well, this is the job and you better do it.' It's about, 'Oh, what skills do you bring and how can we make use of that and help you grow?'"

Employees say:
"We are very focused on innovation, which has had many positive impacts—happy clients, more efficient work, more work-life balance. The firm is always thinking of ways to make Orrick a best place to work—whether that is offering unique benefits (like Unplug Time), disrupting the associate talent market, or providing additional training and support to team members. I feel so lucky to be a part of the team."
