In a technically insightful online workshop, the IEEE ESPRIT Student Branch introduced the IEEE SIGHT Group and its innovative Beach Cleaner Project, focusing on how technology can drive tangible environmental impact.

The workshop began with an overview of the IEEE SIGHT Group’s mission to deploy engineering and technology-based solutions to address community challenges. The core of the session revolved around the Beach Cleaner Project, which is designed to tackle coastal pollution by using a specialized, automated beach-cleaning mechanism.

Participants were introduced to the technical aspects of the project, including the engineering design and the use of autonomous systems and sensors to detect and remove waste from beaches. The presentation delved into the mechanics of the system, including its environmental sensors, AI-powered waste detection algorithms, and its energy-efficient operation, ensuring minimal ecological disturbance while maximizing the collection of waste.

Attendees also discussed the software architecture, which integrates IoT and real-time data analytics to monitor and optimize the cleaning process. The project showcased how interdisciplinary collaboration combining robotics, AI, and environmental science—can lead to impactful solutions.
