You can link a new credit or debit card to your account by following these steps:
- Click on your profile at https://wordpress.com/me.
- On the side, select the Purchases menu option:
- At the top of the screen, select the “Payment Methods” tab.
- Click the “Add payment method” button.
- On the next page, fill in the card details and choose payment method settings.
- Click the “Save Card” button.
Adding a payment method to your account is only possible for credit card payments. However, you can add a new PayPal account for future renewals from the subscription settings page.
Any payment method you add to your account is private to you. If you have added another administrator to your site, they cannot view or use your payment information.
To use a payment method for all subscriptions, follow these steps when adding the payment method:
- Add your payment method details.
- Select the checkbox for “Use this payment method for all subscriptions on my account.”
- Click the “Save card” button.
In addition, checking the box will mark the payment method as a backup for current and future subscriptions, which will be used if the assigned payment method fails during renewal. To change the payment method’s backup status, view and manage your payment methods.
You can use different payment methods for different subscriptions on your account. When you purchase a new subscription, you can use a different payment method, which will not impact the payment method used for existing subscriptions.
You can also change the payment method for a single existing subscription through the subscription details page.
If eligible, a co-badged credit card will include the option to select your preferred card network, such as Cartes Bancaires in France. Your preference will be saved so that future charges to this saved payment method will continue to be made with the chosen card brand.
Once you have entered your co-badged card number, the card network selector icon will appear in the “Card number” field of the credit card form. Click the downward arrow next to the card icon to select your preferred card brand network:
The card network selector icon will appear only when the following conditions are satisfied:
- Your WordPress.com account currency is set to
EURO
. - You are geographically located within the region where the co-badged card is supported.
- You have entered a card number that supports co-badged networks.
Backup payment methods are used in the event of a failed renewal for any subscription on your account.
Any payment method on an account can be set to serve as a backup payment method. When a primary payment method on an account fails to renew its associated purchase, the billing system will then try to charge any of the listed backup payment methods on the account until a method succeeds.
To assign a backup payment method:
- Click on your profile at https://wordpress.com/me.
- On the left side, select the Purchases menu option.
- At the top of the screen, select the “Payment Methods” tab.
- Under the “Manage Your Credit Cards” section, tick the box labeled “Use as backup” to mark a payment method as a fallback when the primary payment method fails.
Once a backup method is successfully used to renew a purchase, it is assigned as the primary method for future renewals.
You can update the payment method used for any subscription in your WordPress.com account. The steps to follow are:
- Click on your profile at https://wordpress.com/me
- On the left side, select the Purchases menu option
- Select the upgrade you wish to update the payment method of
- Below the information, click on the “Change Payment Method” button
- This button will not appear if you are not the owner of the subscription. Contact the user on your site who made the purchase to ask them to update the payment method
- You can select from pre-saved cards on your account, add a new credit or debit card, or use PayPal (if available) for future renewals of your subscription
Changing the payment method for a single subscription will not change the payment method used for any other active subscriptions on your account. If you want to use the new payment method for all of your subscriptions, add the card to your account and set it to be used for all subscriptions.
Local payment methods can be used for both new purchases and renewals in checkout but cannot be assigned to a subscription via the “Add/Change Payment Method” form because they cannot be recharged. If you pay with one of these methods, you will need to manually renew that purchase in the future.
If you selected a preferred card brand for an eligible co-badged card during checkout, you can change the preferred card brand by deleting the card and adding it again with the new card preference.
Your account’s default payment currency will be based on your location when you sign up for an account. The default currency is used for all plans, purchases, and renewals on your account. To change the default frequency, follow these steps:
- Log into your WordPress.com account.
- Visit our Help section, or click to contact us.
- Submit a request to update your payment currency, and include the new currency you want to use.
- Wait for confirmation. Once we update the default currency for you, future charges in your account will be displayed and processed in the updated currency.
You can delete any credit or debit card from WordPress.com. However, to prevent your purchases from expiring, you must assign them an up-to-date payment method.
