Abstract

Update of geographic information systems (GIS) is very important. So far it is done mainly manually. In this paper we propose an approach for the automatic verification of roads. It is a first step to-wards a more automatic update procedure. The approach is based on up-to-date aerial images as well as GIS data. In the surroundings of GIS road-axes candidates for roadsides are searched for in the image based on profiles. The candidates for roadsides are tested and a measure of confidence is calculated for the corresponding GIS road-axes. This leads to a classification of the GIS road-axes into verified, asymmetric and rejected. Practical examples for aerial images of different complexity are given.
