Das Internet wird an der FernUniversität in Hagen seit 1996 intensiv für effektives und flexibles Lernen genutzt. Das Projekt „Virtuelle Universität“ bildet alle Funktionen einer Universität im Netz ab (http://virtuelle-uni.fernuni-hagen.de). Der Prototyp eines elektronischen Shops für gebührenpflichtige Materialien ist realisiert, der speziell für das Internet konzipierte Zahlungssysteme einsetzt.
