Abstract

Most ontology development methodologies practice on ontology reuse. However, those methodologies fail to define precisely the ontology reuse activities. Since the process of ontology engineering should be iterative, a base ontology is a fundamental of a new ontology. This paper highlights building a new base ontology from analysis of 40 webpages of a durian domain using Modified Methodology and is known as Durian Base Ontology (DuriO). The extracted terms are reorganized and converted into Web Ontology Language (OWL). SPARQL is employed in the experiment to obtain the desired answer by evaluating the functionality of DuriO using competency questions. Result shown that, DuriO can be employed successfully in semantic search engine. However, DuriO is base type ontology which many aspects such (class, property and instance) can be further incorporated.
