Abstract
A Zone-Diffusion based Routing Protocol (ZDRP) for LEO satellite networks is proposed in this paper. The proposed routing protocol aims at reducing the broadcast overhead, which is a big problem in LEO satellite networks because of the topological dynamics of LEO constellation. The protocol divides a satellite network into zones, and restricts the broadcasting to the domain of zone. ZDRP operates in an on-demand mode to set up paths between each source-destination pair, and consists of two routing mechanisms, i.e., Route Discovery and Route Maintenance. The two mechanisms work together to allow nodes to discover and maintain source routes to arbitrary destinations in the LEO network. Consequently, the broadcast overhead incurred by routing protocol is decreased greatly. Simulation results show that ZDRP has a good performance in terms of end-to-end delay. Moreover, the packet loss rate is decreased significantly when ZDRP is applied to LEO network.
