I retired from the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in 2018. I’m an applied mathematician, which means 1) I help people get their sums right, and 2) I get to dabble in a wide range of topics. In practice, it is not enough to get the right answer, you have to be able to get those answers at scale, so computers became central to my work. My first encounter with Unix was a Wicat MC68000. This was followed by Sun, Ardent/Stardent, SGI, NeXt, macOS , and Linux systems. My most recent work has been in ocean remote sensing.
