WikiLatih Wikipedia FISIP USU 2024, in collaboration with Garis Literasi, was successfully held on Friday, October 11, 2024 in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Hall room, University of Sumatera Utara (USU). For those who are still unfamiliar with WikiLatih, it is a training and introduction event for beginners to Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia by Wikimedia Indonesia.
Garis Literasi is an internal organization under supervised of the Communication Science program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Sumatra Utara (USU). Their goal is to engage in research and community service that related with digital media literacy issue toward society.
Since Garis Literasi is engaged in communication studies and issues related to digital media literacy, this collaboration is really applicable for students to develop their literacy interests, especially in digital media literacy. At this event, the Communication Science study program of FISIP USU was represented by the Head of the Communication Science Laboratory of FISIP USU, Mrs. Munzaimah M. S.Sos., M.I.Kom. She delivered her warmest welcome to all training participants. Her presence at the event was also replaced the Head of the Study Program, Mrs. Dra. Mazdalifah, M.Sc., Ph.D who couldn’t be present due to her health problem.
In her opening speech, she mentioned the importance of understanding the proper usage of Wikipedia as a reference in teaching and learning activities at campus and within the academic community. The usage of citations to the Wikipedia site as a reference for scientific works created in an academic environment can’t be done, but surely Wikipedia can be an option to find a references collection for valid and reliable information such as scientific journals, books, news, etc.
As additional information, the WikiLatih activity at FISIP USU by Wikimedia Indonesia through its local community, namely the Komunitas Wikimedia Medan, is not the first to be held. Previously, a similar Wikipedia writing training activity was also successfully held in the FISIP USU Theater Room in 2023, this was also in collaboration with the FISIP USU Communication Science Study Program.
Last, all of this training event can’t be done without volunteers contribution from Komunitas Wikimedia Medan, as we mentioned earlier. Starting from the preparation process before the event, until end of training. Members from Komunitas Wikimedia Medan as a local chapter that affiliated with Wikimedia Indonesia in Medan city, is the one who responsible to give their contribution as the tutor and person in charge of WikiLatih Wikipedia FISIP USU 2024 with Garis Literasi.
