Opening of the ‘IEEE Competition on NTN for 6G’ Poster Session – discover more about the finalists.

Location: B Floor

This tutorial session will delve into the pivotal role of satellite networks in global communications, from supporting video broadcasting to complementing terrestrial networks in underserved areas. While traditional success lies in broadcasting and professional applications, the session explores the growing interest in satellite-provided broadband and narrowband mobile services. Attendees will review the evolution of satellite systems, key market drivers, frequency bands, system architectures, and cutting-edge technologies. Highlighted topics include challenges and advancements in non-geostationary narrowband constellations (e.g., Iridium, Starlink), geostationary mobile communication systems (e.g., Inmarsat, Thuraya), high-throughput satellites (e.g., Viasat, Eutelsat), and non-geostationary broadband mega-constellations (e.g., OneWeb, Amazon Kuiper). This comprehensive overview provides a deep understanding of current trends and the future of satellite communications.

Riccardo_De_Gaudenzi_240

Riccardo De Gaudenzi, Professor, University of Parma

Day 2

This tutorial session explores the evolution of satellite and mobile network convergence, which previously operated in isolation. With NTN now integrated into 3GPP standards since Release 17, the session highlights how this innovation extends seamless 5G coverage and sets the stage for a unified network framework in 6G. Attendees will gain an overview of 3GPP standardization, including a detailed review of 5G architecture, NTN features in Releases 17 and 18, and ongoing advancements in Release 19. The session also introduces considerations for natively integrating NTN into 6G systems, with a specific focus on radio access network architecture, providing insights into the future of truly unified network ecosystems.
