Stema municipiului Galaţi, potrivit anexei nr. 5, se compune dintr-un scut tăiat de un brâu undat, de argint; în partea superioară, pe fond albastru, o corabie neagră, cu două catarge care au pânzele şi flamurile de argint, pluteşte pe valuri.

Câmpul inferior este despicat. În cartierul din dreapta, pe fond roşu, doi peşti de argint, adorsaţi; în cartierul din stânga, pe fond de aur, un caducel negru.

Scutul este timbrat de o coroană murală de argint, formată din şapte turnuri crenelate.

Semnificaţia elementelor însumate:

- evidenţiază rolul acestui oraş în dezvoltarea navigaţiei şi a pescuitului.
