About Us

Who we are

At Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), we’re committed to keeping you up to date with the chemistry news that matters most. Our reporters and editors track important research advances, business and policy trends, chemical safety practices, career guidance, and more.

We are the world's most comprehensive and authoritative source of news about chemistry and related fields. Our journalists are based in the US, Europe, and Asia, and chemists recognize us for our breaking-news coverage and award-winning features.

C&EN has been published by the American Chemical Society since 1923. Our beloved weekly print magazine is still going strong. And with our suite of digital offerings, you can now get our chemistry news anytime, anywhere.

  • C&EN subscribers get our weekly magazine delivered to their mailboxes in print or to their inboxes digitally. Institutional subscribers can read C&EN through C&EN Global Enterprise alongside ACS journals.

  • Our website brings real-time chemistry coverage to your desktop and mobile devices. To keep up with the very latest from C&EN, subscribe to our RSS feeds—choose to receive one feed of all our content or tailor your feeds to the topics you care about most—and follow us Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. In the mood for a throwback? Explore C&EN Archives to find out what happened in chemistry on this day years ago.

  • C&EN subscribers have exclusive access to C&EN’s mobile app, Chemistry News by C&EN. You can download the app here for iOS/Apple devices and here for Android devices. Find answers to frequently asked questions about our mobile app here.

  • Our tailored newsletters deliver the best of C&EN to your inbox each week. ACS members automatically receive a weekly roundup of editors' picks, and nonmembers can sign up for a curated selection of content.

  • Our chemistry podcast, Stereo Chemistry, features the voices of our reporters as well as the chemists making the news. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts.

We’re on a mission to bring you the best C&EN experience, and we have a lot more planned.

How we operate

Our vision is to be the world’s go-to source of news about chemistry.

To meet that vision, both our reporting and our newsroom must include diverse perspectives. Our staff-led DEIR Committee ensures we create a diverse, inclusive, and respectful environment for staff and readers alike.

Realizing our vision also requires that we put our readers first. Our staff-led Ethics Committee ensures we maintain readers’ trust by telling the truth, prioritizing transparency, and remaining independent from outside influences.

For example, ACS publishes C&EN, but C&EN remains editorially independent of ACS. Views expressed in C&EN do not necessarily reflect official positions of ACS unless expressly stated.

C&EN is also editorially independent from third-party advertisers and its native advertising agency, C&EN BrandLab. C&EN is committed to making the source and nature of third-party content transparent to readers, viewers, and listeners. Editorial staff members are not involved in reporting, writing, or otherwise unduly influencing any content produced by a third party, including that produced by C&EN’s business or sales representatives.

Meet our Content Advisory Board

C&EN's advisory board is a diverse group with members from industry, academia, government, and other scientific organizations around the world. Advisory board members serve 3-year terms and interact with C&EN staff to provide insight, advice, and suggestions on how to best serve our audience and the world of chemistry.

Maxx Arguilla (University of California, Irvine), Nessa Carson (AstraZeneca), Jinwoo Cheon (Center for Nanomedicine, Institute for Basic Science, and Department of Chemistry, Yonsei University), François-Xavier Coudert (National Center for Scientific Research and Chimie ParisTech), Thomas Epps III (University of Delaware), Robert J. Gilliard, Jr. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Mohamed Ateia Ibrahim (United States Environmental Protection Agency), Reginald Rogers (University of Missouri), Anubhav Saxena (India Technology Center, Momentive Performance Materials), Dan Shine (Thermo Fisher Scientific), Michael Sofia (Arbutus Biopharma), James C. Meet our editorial board

C&EN's editorial board, as mandated by ACS's constitution and bylaws, regularly reviews the editorial performance of C&EN. It serves as a communication link between the ACS Board of Directors and C&EN's editor in chief and staff, as well as a bridge between ACS membership and C&EN. Its seven members include the chair of the ACS Committee on Publications (the board's chair), the chair of the ACS Board of Directors, the president of the society, and four others appointed by the board’s chair.

Committee on Publications Chair Robert E. Maleczka (Professor, Michigan State University), ACS Board of Directors Chair Wayne E. Jones (Provost and Vice President, Academic Affairs, University of New Hampshire), ACS President Mary K. Carroll (Dwane W. Crichton Professor of Chemistry, Union College), John Gavenonis (Agilent Technologies), Manuel Guzman (CAS, ACS), Xiaosong Li (Department of Chemistry, University of Washington), Amy Ripka (Lucy Therapeutics)
