In recent years, live cells have been employed as biosensors for a wide range of targets. In this review, we will focus on the use of microorganisms that are genetically modified with the desirable outputs in order to improve the biosensor performance. Different methodologies based on genetic\/protein engineering and synthetic biology to construct microorganisms with the required signal outputs, sensitivity, and selectivity will be discussed.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s130505777","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2013,5,6]],"date-time":"2013-05-06T16:49:36Z","timestamp":1367858976000},"page":"5777-5795","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":169,"title":["Microbial Biosensors: Engineered Microorganisms as the Sensing Machinery"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"13","author":[{"given":"Miso","family":"Park","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716, USA"}]},{"given":"Shen-Long","family":"Tsai","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Chemical Engineering, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taipei 106, Taiwan"}]},{"given":"Wilfred","family":"Chen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716, USA"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2013,5,6]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"2042","DOI":"10.1021\/ac902791q","article-title":"Nano aptasensor for protective antigen toxin of anthrax","volume":"82","author":"Cella","year":"2010","journal-title":"Anal.
