These consequences result from the often more or less hidden coupling between the different design domains. In order to examine these consequences, models need to be created. In practice, this is challenging due to the exchange of data between different engineering domains, since different software applications are often used and the effort involved with manual model creation. In this paper, we explore the use of graph-based design languages in a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach to link the digital factory with building design. We also show that the use of a common formal representation based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) supports the interoperability between the two domains. Finally, we demonstrate how the engineering knowledge for the preliminary design of a factory building can be formally described using graph-based design languages and how the production line of the digital factory can then be used as an input to automatically create valid preliminary designs for the factory building.1<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/jid200019","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,11,19]],"date-time":"2021-11-19T16:20:43Z","timestamp":1637338843000},"page":"95-120","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Connecting Building Design with the Digital Factory by Design Languages to Explore Different Solutions"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"24","author":[{"given":"Christopher","family":"Voss","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Aircraft Design, University of Stuttgart, Germany"}]},{"given":"Frank","family":"Petzold","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Chair for Architectural Informatics, Leonhard Obermeyer Center, Munich Data Science Institute, Technical University of Munich, Germany"}]},{"given":"Stephan","family":"Rudolph","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Aircraft Design, University of Stuttgart, Germany"}]}],"member":"179","container-title":["Journal of Integrated Design and Process Science"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/content.iospress.com\/download?id=10.3233\/JID200019","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,3,10]],"date-time":"2025-03-10T15:13:51Z","timestamp":1741619631000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.3233\/JID200019"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2022,4,11]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"3-4"},"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/jid200019","relation":{},"ISSN":["1092-0617","1875-8959"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"1092-0617"},{"type":"electronic","value":"1875-8959"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2022,4,11]]}}}
