It is a SCHEME-based queueing network simulator, whose discus sion serves to demonstrate the suitability of symbolic languages and exploratory programming styles for system simulation. <\/jats:p> After justifying the use of symbolic languages and an object- oriented approach to model design, basic features of POSE are presented, using a simple example. This is followed by a brief description of the simulator's architecture. A final chapter sum marizes and reflects on our experiences, suggesting that object- oriented simulation environments hosted on powerful personal workstations may well offer major breakthroughs in terms of ef fectiveness and user acceptance. Computational efficiency, while a lesser concern to \"investigative simulation,\" remains unsatisfac tory in simulations used for quantitative predictions. This prob lem may hopefully be overcome through future advances in soft ware and hardware technologies. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/003754978805000404","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,3,29]],"date-time":"2008-03-29T17:23:43Z","timestamp":1206811423000},"page":"143-153","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":7,"title":["POSE: a Process-Oriented Simulation Environment embedded in SCHEME"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"50","author":[{"given":"Malcolm C.","family":"Stairmand","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science University of Canterbury Christchurch, New Zealand"}]},{"given":"Wolfgang","family":"Kreutzer","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science University of Canterbury Christchurch, New Zealand"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1988,4,1]]},"reference":[{"volume-title":"Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs","year":"1985","author":"Abelson, H.","key":"atypb1"},{"volume-title":"Anatomy of Lisp","year":"1978","author":"Allen, J.R.","key":"atypb2"},{"volume-title":"Proceedings of the \"3rd Symposium on Computer Aided Control System Design","author":"Astroem, K.J.","key":"atypb3"},{"key":"atypb4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-1-349-03840-4"},{"volume-title":"Proceedings of\"Simulation: A Research Focus","author":"Birtwistle, G.","key":"atypb5"},{"issue":"1","key":"atypb6","first-page":"61","volume":"1","author":"Birtwistle, G.","year":"1984","journal-title":"Transactions of the SCS"},{"volume-title":"Simulation with GPSS and GPSS V","year":"1976","author":"Bobillier, P.A.","key":"atypb7"},{"volume-title":"The Scheme Programming Language","year":"1986","author":"Dybvig, K.","key":"atypb8"},{"volume-title":"SMALLTALK-80 - The Interactive Programming Environment","year":"1984","author":"Goldberg, A.","key":"atypb9"},{"volume-title":"Smalltalk-80 - The Language and its Implementation","year":"1983","author":"Goldberg, A.","key":"atypb10"},{"key":"atypb11","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/003754978704800202"},{"key":"atypb12","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0096-0551(86)90007-X"},{"key":"atypb13","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/003754978704800407"},{"key":"atypb14","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/003754978604600103"},{"volume-title":"System Simulation-Programming Styles and Languages","year":"1986","author":"Kreutzer, W.","key":"atypb15"},{"volume-title":"Proceedings of the 2nd European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming","author":"Kreutzer, W.","key":"atypb16"},{"volume-title":"Artificial Intelligence-Programming Styles and Metaphors","year":"1988","author":"Kreutzer, W.","key":"atypb17"},{"key":"atypb18","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/003754978604700601"},{"key":"atypb19","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1057\/jors.1985.25"},{"key":"atypb20","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/003754978604600102"},{"key":"atypb21","first-page":"131","author":"Sheil, B.A.","year":"1983","journal-title":"DATAMATION"},{"volume-title":"Proceedings of the 1984 Annual Simulation Symposium","author":"Standridge, C.R.","key":"atypb22"},{"key":"atypb23","first-page":"40","author":"Stefik, M.","year":"1985","journal-title":"The AI Magazine"},{"volume-title":"Fundamental Structures of Computer Science","year":"1981","author":"Wulf, W.A.","key":"atypb24"},{"volume-title":"AI Applied to Simulation","year":"1986","author":"E.
