We measured the extent to which virtual representations were both perceived and treated as if they were human via self-report, behavioral, and cognitive dependent measures. Distinctive patterns of findings emerged with respect to the behavior and appearance of embodied agents depending on the definition and operationalization of copresence. Independent and interactive effects for appearance and behavior were found suggesting that assessing the impact of behavioral realism on copresence without taking into account the appearance of the embodied agent (and vice versa) can lead to misleading conclusions. Consistent with the results of previous research, copresence was lowest when there was a large mismatch between the appearance and behavioral realism of an embodied agent. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1162\/105474605774785235","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,11,12]],"date-time":"2005-11-12T23:06:06Z","timestamp":1131836766000},"page":"379-393","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":268,"title":["The Independent and Interactive Effects of Embodied-Agent Appearance and Behavior on Self-Report, Cognitive, and Behavioral Markers of Copresence in Immersive Virtual Environments"],"prefix":"10.1162","volume":"14","author":[{"given":"Jeremy N.","family":"Bailenson","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Communication, Stanford University, Stanford CA 94305 USA,"}]},{"given":"Kim","family":"Swinth","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Psychology, University of California, Santa, Barbara, Santa Barbara CA 93106 USA"}]},{"given":"Crystal","family":"Hoyt","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Leadership, University of Richmond, Richmond VA 23173 USA"}]},{"given":"Susan","family":"Persky","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Alex","family":"Dimov","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Psychology, University of California, Santa, Barbara, Santa Barbara CA 93106 USA"}]},{"given":"Jim","family":"Blascovich","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Psychology, University of California, Santa, Barbara, Santa Barbara CA 93106 USA"}]}],"member":"281","reference":[{"key":"p_2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/vis.297"},{"key":"p_3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/1054746041944803"},{"key":"p_4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/105474601753272844"},{"key":"p_5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0146167203029007002"},{"key":"p_9","author":"Biocca F.","year":"1997","journal-title":"Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, 3(2).
