Tremendous amounts of data remain in ordinary operating system files, in network and hierarchical databases, and in other repositories. The need to query and manipulate that data alongside SQL data continues to grow. Database system vendors have developed many approaches to providing such integrated access.In this (partly guested) article, SQL's new part, Management of External Data (SQL\/MED), is explored to give readers a better notion of just how applications can use standard SQL to concurrently access their SQL data and their non-SQL data.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/373626.373709","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,11,9]],"date-time":"2005-11-09T22:23:27Z","timestamp":1131575007000},"page":"70-77","update-policy":"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":16,"title":["SQL and management of external data"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"30","author":[{"given":"Jim","family":"Melton","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle, Sandy, UT"}]},{"given":"Jan-Eike","family":"Michels","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, San Jose, CA"}]},{"given":"Vanja","family":"Josifovski","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, San Jose, CA"}]},{"given":"Krishna","family":"Kulkarni","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, San Jose, CA"}]},{"given":"Peter","family":"Schwarz","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, San Jose, CA"}]},{"given":"Kathy","family":"Zeidenstein","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, San Jose, CA"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2001,3]]},"container-title":["ACM SIGMOD Record"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1145\/373626.373709","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2023,1,2]],"date-time":"2023-01-02T12:04:03Z","timestamp":1672661043000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/373626.373709"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2001,3]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2001,3]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1145\/373626.373709"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/373626.373709","relation":{},"ISSN":["0163-5808"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0163-5808","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2001,3]]},"assertion":[{"value":"2001-03-01","order":2,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}]}}
