This work has emphasized how trans people are excluded, harmed, and misrepresented in existing platforms, algorithms, and research methods. While these critiques are important, this paper explores what trans-inclusive quantitative methods could be by applying a participant- or user-driven approach. While the problem of trans-inclusive, -affirming, or -empowering research methods is not specifically a CSCW problem---as we directly confront by comparing and contrasting the perspectives of CSCW and conventional demography---we argue that a CSCW lens may be uniquely suited to addressing it. To this end, this paper makes several contributions: conceptually, we identify points of increasing convergence between conventional demographic research methods (and criticisms thereof) and CSCW, focusing on shared limitations surrounding how identity is handled in research; methodologically, we present a sketch of how these limitations might be addressed by using social network analysis to \"triangulate\" social identities while considering them relative and situated; empirically, we implement these methods in a case study of gender within the broader social context of Reddit and discuss the results.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3449082","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,22]],"date-time":"2021-04-22T17:47:23Z","timestamp":1619113643000},"page":"1-31","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Nobody Puts Redditor in a Binary"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"5","author":[{"given":"Leo G.","family":"Stewart","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA"}]},{"given":"Emma S.","family":"Spiro","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,22]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/2702613.2732733"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","volume-title":"Third international AAAI conference on Weblogs and Social Media.
