A component-based programming model is the key factor in the rapid adoption of SOA. SOA exploits the properties of Component Based Software Engineering (CBSE) in the form of services. SOA components help to provide the business users with some flexibility to play around with the components and rewire them to create new business solutions. The complexity of SOA application plays an important role in project planning and determination of timeline and cost estimation and allocation of resources. This paper proposes a metric-based approach for the determination of relative complexity and coupling of Component based SOA application. We have proposed a Service Component Architecture Graph (SCAG) which can be used for graphical representation of the different service module, the service components in the service module and interaction among them. This metrics may be used by developers to assess the complexity of SOA application and if required redesign to create highly cohesive components with minimal coupling. It will also promote a culture of asset (reusable components) based development by considering the factor like usability, complexity, coupling etc. A case study is presented and graph based analysis is done for deriving the complexity, along with the other aspects of the architecture.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/2020976.2020981","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2011,10,11]],"date-time":"2011-10-11T14:29:02Z","timestamp":1318343342000},"page":"1-6","update-policy":"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["SCAG"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"36","author":[{"given":"Jayeeta","family":"Chanda","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"B.P.Poddar Institute of Management & Technology, Kolkata, India"}]},{"given":"Sabnam","family":"Sengupta","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"B.P.Poddar Institute of Management & Technology, Kolkata, India"}]},{"given":"Ananya","family":"Kanjilal","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"B.P.Poddar Institute of Management & Technology, Kolkata, India"}]},{"given":"Swapan","family":"Bhattacharya","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,9,30]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/GCC.2007.101"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/ICCBSS.2007.4"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/SCC.2008.137"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/ECOWS.2007.3"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/SERVICES-1.2008.62"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_6_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/SERVICES-1.2008.62"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_7_1","volume-title":"Hyderabad","author":"Kanjilal Ananya","year":"2008"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_8_1","article-title":"Component Metrics to Measure Component Quality","author":"Cho Eun Sook","journal-title":"IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_9_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/986537.986562"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_10_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/1350802.1350810"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_11_1","unstructured":"www.soaprinciples.com\/service_loose_coupling.php www.soaprinciples.com\/service_loose_coupling.php"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_12_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/1890810.1890814"}],"container-title":["ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1145\/2020976.2020981","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2022,12,29]],"date-time":"2022-12-29T18:42:18Z","timestamp":1672339338000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/2020976.2020981"}},"subtitle":["a graphical approach to measure the complexity of the SOA application"],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2011,9,30]]},"references-count":12,"journal-issue":{"issue":"5","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2011,9,30]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1145\/2020976.2020981"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/2020976.2020981","relation":{},"ISSN":["0163-5948"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0163-5948","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2011,9,30]]},"assertion":[{"value":"2011-09-30","order":2,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}]}}
