Diatoms are unicellular algae found in water and other places wherever there is humidity and enough light for photosynthesis. The automatic identification of diatoms has applications in a number of areas, for example, environmental monitoring and climate research. The overall identification is performed by an ensemble of multiple decision trees following the bagging approach. The use of human-interpretable features in contrast to traditional features, such as Fourier descriptors or moment invariants, makes it possible for a human expert to verify the induced decision trees and opens up the possibility of integrating human expert knowledge into automatically derived decision trees. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1142\/s0219467802000470","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2002,7,27]],"date-time":"2002-07-27T11:07:52Z","timestamp":1027768072000},"page":"67-87","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION OF DIATOMS USING VISUAL HUMAN-INTERPRETABLE FEATURES"],"prefix":"10.1142","volume":"02","author":[{"given":"STEFAN","family":"FISCHER","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, University of Bern, Neubrueckstrasse 10, CH-3012 Bern, Switzerland"}]},{"given":"HORST","family":"BUNKE","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, University of Bern, Neubrueckstrasse 10, CH-3012 Bern, Switzerland"}]}],"member":"219","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,11,20]]},"reference":[{"key":"p_4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/BF00058655"},{"key":"p_5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1023\/A:1007607513941"},{"key":"p_6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S1088-467X(98)00023-7"},{"key":"p_9","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/3-540-44596-X_14"},{"key":"p_10","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0031-3203(93)90098-H"},{"key":"p_12","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/34.232073"},{"key":"p_17","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0031-3203(94)00104-T"}],"container-title":["International Journal of Image and Graphics"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.worldscientific.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1142\/S0219467802000470","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2019,8,7]],"date-time":"2019-08-07T01:01:09Z","timestamp":1565139669000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.worldscientific.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1142\/S0219467802000470"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2002,1]]},"references-count":7,"journal-issue":{"issue":"01","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,11,20]]},"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2002,1]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1142\/S0219467802000470"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1142\/s0219467802000470","relation":{},"ISSN":["0219-4678","1793-6756"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0219-4678","type":"print"},{"value":"1793-6756","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2002,1]]}}}
