{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2023,6,1]],"date-time":"2023-06-01T08:56:43Z","timestamp":1685609803154},"reference-count":66,"publisher":"Emerald","issue":"3","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2022,3,11]],"date-time":"2022-03-11T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1646956800000},"content-version":"tdm","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/site-policies"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["JSIT"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2022,7,11]]},"abstract":"Purpose<\/jats:title>The purpose of this paper is to investigate how information technology (IT) firms are different from non-IT firms in terms of corporate social responsibility and financial variables for attracting and retaining employees.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec>Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title>Through logit regression models, the authors used corporate social responsibility and financial variables to examine the differences between 512 Fortune\u2019s Best Companies to Work For and a random sample of 512 Non-Best Companies peer firms.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec>Findings<\/jats:title>The analysis results show that IT firms are stronger in terms of research and development spending, return on assets, Tobin\u2019s q and leverage conditions, as well as employee relations and environmental performance in corporate social responsibility. Moreover, for IT firms, innovativeness (characterized by high research and development expenditures) is by far the strongest predictor of whether a company is selected to be on the Best Companies to Work For list.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec>Research limitations\/implications<\/jats:title>This research demonstrated a hybrid, multifaceted research design using different analysis tools to explore new factors of a research topic.
