{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2024,11,19]],"date-time":"2024-11-19T16:19:14Z","timestamp":1732033154574},"reference-count":20,"publisher":"Emerald","issue":"6","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2009,11,27]],"date-time":"2009-11-27T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1259280000000},"content-version":"tdm","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/site-policies"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2009,11,27]]},"abstract":"Purpose<\/jats:title>The purpose of this conceptual paper is to present a simple, novel method for excluding self\u2010citation from h<\/jats:italic>\u2010index values \u2013 the b<\/jats:italic>\u2010index.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec>Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title>The work described assumes that relative self\u2010citation rate is constant across an author's publications and that the citation profile of a set of papers follows a Zipfian distribution, and from this derives a simple mathematical expression for excluding self\u2010citation from h<\/jats:italic>\u2010index values.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec>Findings<\/jats:title>It is shown that this new index is simply equal to the integer value of the author's external citation rate (non\u2010self\u2010citations) to the power three quarters, multiplied by their h<\/jats:italic>\u2010index.
