Normal のダウンタウンに、地元の建築家 Arthur F. Moratz が Art Moderne 様式で設計し、
Sylvan and Ruth Kupfer が建て、1937 年 11 月にオープンした。
開業当時の座席数は 620 席で、
グランドオープンでは、
Bing Crosby and Martha Raye 主演のミュージカル “ Double or Nothing”、
Popeye の漫画、ニュース映画が上映された。
Streamline のモダンな建物は、当時最先端の映画館で、
“最高に心地よい環境で映画を鑑賞！“
との歌い文句で宣伝され、Publix Great States Theatres に貸し出された。

1974 年 12 月、Springfield のチェーン店 Kerasotes Brothers が劇場を引き継いだが、
1982 年に、Kerasotes は Bloomington の Irvin Theater を閉鎖し、
Normal Theater を “dollar house” にした。
1985 年に、この劇場は 2 つのスクリーンを持つ劇場に分割された後、
Normal Theater の商業運営は 1991 年終了した。
その後 Normal 市が買い取り、改修し、
1993 年に非営利の Theater として再オープン。
グランドオープンでは “ Singi’n in the Rain” が上映され、
それ以来ずっと運営が続けられていて、新作や古い映画の上映を行っている。

珊瑚色のシート、青・栗色・サーモンピンクの壁、高いモダンな通路のライト、多色のネオンの灯りの層の天井、
と完全に改修されて素晴らしい Art Deco の劇場となり、昔に戻った気分で楽しめる。
建築基準の変更により、Normal Theater の座席数は現在 385 席。
1996 年 6 月、
the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois から “Preservation Project of the Year” 賞を受賞、
1997 年には the National Register of Historic Places に登録された。
