It’s time to bring out the shiny, dangling reflectors again. With more dark hours in the day than light, these can be lifesavers, making pedestrians and cyclist visible to drivers.
According to traffic safety organization Liikenneturva operating under the Ministry of Transport and Communications, nearly half the deaths of pedestrians occur in dark or at dusk.
Committees investigating traffic accident researched some 20 pedestrian deaths that took place in the dark or at dusk in 2011. In 14 of these cases the person was not wearing a reflector.
Liikenneturva is kicking of the reflector season with a campaign in the internet, newspapers and outdoor posters.
