IMO –
the International Maritime Organization – is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. IMO's work supports the UN sustainable development goals.
Key treaties under the FAO, ILO and IMO support safe and legal fishing. A workshop in Mombasa, Kenya focused on coordinated implementation of these treaties, which address fishing vessel safety, labour rights, and measures against IUU fishing.
Ship recycling countries are seeking stronger investments, as demands on the industry are expected to rise significantly in coming years. IMO’s SENSREC project engaged the global banking and investment community to discuss investment opportunties.
The IMO Council has modernized its meeting procedures to formally allow virtual participation and public livestreaming of plenary discussions.
