Editor's Notes:

Tornadoes are more common in the United States than in any other country. Tornado season typically runs from March to early July in the United States, moving from south to north as the year progresses. The storms kill an average of 70 people a year.

The death toll of this year's tornadoes, now at more than 480, is the highest since 1953, when an outbreak of twisters across the Midwest and the Northeast claimed 519 lives. This year now ranks eighth on the list of deadliest tornado years. The followings are the deadliest tornados in the U.S. this year and two other devastating tornadoes on record that occurred in recent years.
