Editor's note:  A roller coaster year of drama, suspense, and intrigue, the top headlines of 2012 sparked some of China's fiercest debates and also marked some of its proudest accomplishments to-date. For most of the Summer and Fall, China was outraged by Japan's so-called "nationalization" of the Diaoyu Islands. The September dismissal of former Chongqing Party Secretary Bo Xilai and the subsequent arrest and conviction of his wife Gu Kailai rocked the country and set off a wave of anticorruption campaigns. China's first successful space dock and the commissioning of its first aircraft carrier, Liaoning, showcased achievements in science and technology. The year culminated in the election of Xi Jinping to serve as the country's next leader. In his acceptance speech, Xi promised not to deviate from the China's reform and opening-up and usher in reforms that would sustain the nation's long-term development.
