About NCSI (Formerly a UGC agency and a department of IISc)
The National Centre for Science Information (NCSI) was established by the Universities Grants Commission (UGC) of India at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) (http://www.iisc.ernet.in) in 1983. Over the years NCSI pioneered information services based on information technology for research scholars all over India. In disseminated the know-how gained to library professionals across India through its highly effective training programs. Over years NCSI has had many firsts to its credit including:
- Computerized selective dissemination of information (SDI) and document delivery Services in the 80s and 90s
- India's first interoperable, OA institutional repository, ePrints@IISc (http://eprints.iisc.ernet.in), in 2002.
- Electronic These and Dissertations (ETD) repository of IISc was started in 2005 http://etd.iisc.ernet.in.
- Workshops at the national level to train people in Internet Technologies like Digital Libraries and setting up and maintaining interoperable, OA Institutional Repositories.
NCSI ceased to be funded by UGC in the year ....... and continued to be a department of IISc till its closure in .....
About NCSIs Training Program
NCSI incepted a focused training program for library professionals in the year .... These equipped young professionals with the requisite IT skills required for managing modern libraries and information services. Initially it was a one-year program named "Application of IT for Library and Information Services" which later evolved into an 18-month course called 'Information and Knowledge Management' (IKM). Over the years, more than one hundred students have completed this training programme and are well placed in the corporate and Government sectors.
