A workshop for space lidar experts and practitioners from the international community of space agencies, industry and academia.
Workshop goals:
Review and assess the scientific needs for space-based lidar measurements and the maturity of lidar techniques to meet these needs
Present and discuss results from existing and past lidar space-based missions
Discuss challenges and future directions in research and technology development
Discuss approaches to reduce risk and costs for space-based lidar instruments and missions and to increase their lifetimes
Identify synergies and ways to enhance space lidar missions through international cooperation among various space agencies and organizations
Document the results in an conference report
The topics planned for presentations and discussion:
- Advances in space-based lidar techniques and methodologies
- Science highlights, observational approaches, and technologies used
- Challenges experienced and lessons-learned in space lidar missions to date and discussion of approaches to overcome them
- Planning of new space lidar missions. These include those for the determination of: aerosol, cloud and ocean properties, topographic, cryospheric and biomass mapping, wind fields, and atmospheric composition including greenhouse gases, and other gases
- Results from or plans for simulations, airborne experiments and demonstrations as precursors for space missions
- New and emerging space lidar technologies, particularly in lasers, telescopes, electronics and detectors
- Space laser reliability and factors which influence it; and effects of the space environment (thermal, contamination, and radiation effects)
Intent
The intent of this workshop is to offer a venue and create a framework, where scientists, and technologists from different countries, government agencies, industries and universities can meet and discuss important issues related to current and planned space lidar missions and technologies. It will also discuss challenges and common issues, and explore ways to increase collaboration and to enhance future opportunities. Unlike conferences, this workshop is planned as an interactive focused effort, where participants are continually engaged throughout the workshop. All speakers will be invited but the workshop is open to all for registration, participation, discussions and contributions. Key contributions from a broader lidar community can be accommodated as part of the Workshop report, and based on the availability of time; the Technical Session Chair (TLC) may bring a germane topic for further discussion or even a short presentation. The workshop should be viewed as an opportunity for the participants, representing their agencies or organizations, to come together and look for answers and increase collaboration to help further the application of space lidar in present and future missions. The workshop will provide a forum for the participants to share their visions with others, develop an understanding of the measurement requirements and technical challenges, and identify key areas for collaboration/cooperation with international partners to leverage knowledge and resources for the success of their future mission. Inviting, recruiting and actively engaging experts in the topical areas to lead the technical session are the KEY task for the success of this workshop. We, the Workshop Chair/Co-Chair, need your help in suggesting and offering key experts to be the lead of TLCs, Invited Speakers, or Panel Members for each proposed Technical Sessions.
Registration and attendance
- Attendance is open to all. Registration is mandatory
- There is no "Call for Papers" as this is an "experts" meeting and not a conference
- All planned presentations are invited
- Other attendees may submit an extended abstract and bring material relevant to the workshop objectives that, if the session chair agrees, may be presented in relevant sessions
- The workshop report will be an open report published by the IEEE. Contributors are responsible for any clearance from their respective organizations.
